Brett Coffman, President, currently teaches AP World History, Kansas City History, and Minorities in US History at Liberty High School in Liberty, Missouri. He has been on the board of directors of MCSS since 2006 and has served on Treasurer and President. He has been a teacher for 16 years in public and private schools and has taught grades 4-12. His interests in social studies include getting social studies recognized as a core and essential subject area, and developing curriculum and instructional practices using social studies to enrich the reading and writing skills of students of all grades.
Tracy Cobden, President-Elect, has been a member of the MCSS Board since 2006. She has taught high school Social Studies in Raytown, Missouri since 2002 and prior she taught junion high in Frankfort, Illinois. Tracy earned a Bachelors degree in History from Northern Illinois University in 1997 and her Master of Liberal Arts from Baker University in 2004. Holocaust education is Tracy's area of interest and she is a proud member of the Isak Federman Teaching Cadre through the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education. Tracy is a Transatlantic Outreach Program (TOPS) Fellow and took part in the Holocaust and Jewish Resistance Teachers' Program in Poland and Israel. Her goal is to continue to make Social Studies relevant to young people an dbring it to the forefront of education in Missouri.
Jessica Vehlewald, Past-President, has been actively involved in social studies education, as well as curriculum development and implementation, for the past nineteen years. She began her career in a junior high/middle school setting where she taught Geography and American History. Additionaly, she was the Social Studies Department Chairperson and professional development leader for the school. For the next seven years, she worked at the high school level teaching primarily AP European HIstory, as well as Government, U.S. History, and Modern World History. She was the instructional leader for the Social Studies Department while acting as the Social Studies Deparment Chairperson. Currently, she serves as the Social Studies Instructional Coach K-12 for the Rockwood School District.
Mickey Ebert currently holds the MCSS board position of Vice-President.
Glenn Mechem, Vice-President, is currently in his twenty-eighth year of teaching, with twenty-seven of them at Union High School in Union, Missouri. He has been active in MCSS as well as NCSS for over twelve years. During his years of teaching he has taught Psychology, Sociology, World History and Advanced Placement US History. He has also coached girls basketball and presently coaches girls track. He is also department chair.
